Rationale for Balance Transfers in Australia

Rationale for Balance Transfers in Australia

Balance transfers for credit cards are becoming more popular than ever, and Australia is no exception. What is the rationale and history behind the growing financial trend?
Taking a regular look at the statistics for the Australian credit card market is a very important exercise, if for no other reason than to be able to infer things based on what is going on in the statistics. For example, a recent trend that has started to become very evident in the Australian credit card market is one that has to do with balance transfers.

They didn’t get any traction when they were first introduced a few years ago but now they have become very popular indeed. Balance transfers in Australia per capita have started to match those in other countries and there are a couple of reasons as to why this might be the case.

Taking Advantage of Good Offers

One reason that you may be seeing a large number of balance transfers in the Australian credit card market is that the balance transfers in that market are being stepped up now as people have started to take advantage of good offers. While a person may go about from credit card to credit card because of things like interest rates and reward programs, most of the people that are active in the Australian credit card market have enough good sense to know that they need to concentrate on one or two credit cards in order to really get all of the benefits.

For that reason, there are many people that naturally gravitate towards balance transfers as a way of allowing them to switch between credit cards. After all, the whole point of a balance transfer was initially to allow people to switch between different credit cards, transfer the balance to the new credit card and then cancel the old one. It allows people to take advantage of good offers when they come up and for this reason balance transfers have always been used as a way to jump from one ship to the next. It is possible that the reason for the recent bump in balance transfer usage in Australia has to do with people finally realizing the importance of this tactic and then putting it to good use in order to get a better interest rate, friendlier blackout dates or anything else that might make a person switch from one credit card to another.

No Other Choice

Another reason that balance transfers may be coming more popular in Australia is that people may feel that they have no other choice in order to get out of a situation. For example, consider a person that has taken out a loan with their car as collateral on the loan, only to find their job gone and their ability to pay back the loan severely compromised. Under normal circumstances, the person would default on the loan and then have their car repossessed because of their inability to make the payments on the loan that they should have been making. This is a terrible situation and with the current economic slowdown it is one that appears to be happening all over the country.

However, what would the average person do if there was a chance that they could get out of the situation by switching the balance of their car loan to their credit card? For most people, the situation would be one they would jump on immediately, not at all caring that after the balance transfer introductory offer ran out that they would have to pay a higher interest rate. Getting out of the present rock and hard place situation would be given a priority and assuming they didn’t get a job within the next few months they would then find a way to deal with that higher interest rate when it actually came. Given that kind of choice for most people there really is no other choice to make aside from using the balance transfer opportunity they have been given.

Conclusion

Whatever the reason is for the increase in balance transfer activity in recent times in the Australian credit card market, the fact of the matter is that the increase is there. The statistics prove it and this is one rare circumstance in which the statistics really can not be interpreted in any other way, shape or form. Balance transfers are starting to become very popular in Australia and more and more people are starting to see just how useful they can be.
